yo
soy
Spanish 101 · Grammar
Ser is irregular in every tense — start by locking down the present forms you will use in every class.
Present indicative: soy, eres, es, somos, sois, son. There is no pattern to guess — memorize and drill.
Ser introduces predicate nouns and adjectives of identity or classification: Es médico, Somos amigos.
Because subject pronouns are often dropped, the ending carries the person: Es estudiante could be he, she, or you (usted) — context decides.
Never *soy es* or *somos son* — one finite verb per clause unless you use a conjunction.
Ustedes son muy amables. You all are very kind.
Es la una y cuarto. It is one fifteen. (clock)
