Some -ir verbs show a stem vowel change only in él/ella/usted and ellos/ellas/ustedes in the preterite (e→i, o→u): sintió / sintieron, durmió / durmieron.
Spelling-changers like -car, -gar, -zar verbs use c/qu, g/gu, and c/z adjustments to keep sounds: saqué, jugó, empecé.
