Grammar spotlight

The preterite views an action as a bounded event: Ayer compré zapatos. Regular -ar preterite endings are -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron; -er/-ir use -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron.

Indirect objects answer “to/for whom”: Le doy la bolsa (I give her the bag). IO pronouns often appear with gustar-type structures and with verbs of giving, showing, telling, and explaining.

¿Cuánto costó la chaqueta?
How much did the jacket cost?
Le expliqué el precio al dependiente.
I explained the price to the clerk.
